In the past several years,
threads and events have been the "hot" way to
structure applications. We compare the concepts of
Events and Threads and review the strengths and
weaknesses of each approach in implementing
systems. Different models are reviewed in the
contexts of Windows (APCs and Win32), OpenVMS
(ASTs), and the multi-platform POSIX threads and
similar event-based models (e.g. OSF X-Windows).
 Performance, efficiency, reliability, and
difficulty of implementation are examined, with
examples from the speaker's extensive experience
in the field.
